Cheap Car Insurance Basics - Jargon You Need to Know Before Buying an Auto Insurance

By Jeff X. Sanford

Car insurance covers damages to a car resulting from an accident, and injuries to the passengers with the accident. It may cover other various things, depending on the type of policy that was purchased by the owner. But before you rush into an insurance agency, there are several basic terminologies you need to know before you make the car insurance purchase:

  • Premiums: payments to car insurance policies. Premiums are paid to the car insurance or its agency so that your car is covered under the policy. Car insurance premiums come in assorted varieties, depending on many different determinations.
  • Liability Coverage: Unlike other kinds of insurance, you can not buy a policy which covers specific things for car insurance. This is the reason there are diverse kinds of car insurance. Liability cover the pure basics of car insurance. That means all car insurance polices must include as liability coverage should exceed or equal the minimum state law requires. Liability policies set a dollar amount of coverage for damages paid to the other party involved in the accidents.
  • Collision Coverage: Collision coverage under car insurance is another kind of auto coverage. Collision coverage pays the cost of repairs to a car involved in an accident, or the cash value of the vehicle if it is unable to be repaired, if it is your fault.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Comprehensive coverage in a car insurance is another facet of policy which can be requested when purchasing a car insurance. Comprehensive auto insurance pays for repairs for accidents that are not caused by collisions, such as hail or fire damage or vandalism. In other words, it covers loss not caused by accidents.
  • Gender Factor: Believe it or not, gender is a big factor that insurance companies take into consideration when issuing a policy for auto insurance, because statistics show that males are more likely to have a car accident, and thus have a higher premium.
  • Age Factor: For example, teens are considered to be a high risk and are required to pay higher car insurance premiums. If you are a teenager, good news is you can attend a defensive driving course which could reduce your premium a bit.
  • Deductibles: It's not rare for car insurance policies to contain a deductible that the insured will be responsible for prior to the insurer offering coverage. Deductibles can greatly affect the coverage offered on a car insurance plan, but you may get a much lower premium at the same time.

Armed with those basic knowledge, I believe you'll be in a much better shape to negotiate with your agent and hopefully get a real cheap car insurance you deserve.
