Connecticut Homeowners Insurance Discounts and Connecticut Auto Insurance Discounts

By James J. Robinson

Discovering Connecticut homeowners and auto insurance discounts seems almost like a necessity these days. Part of getting the discounts is just knowing that they are out there. More times than not, insurance companies won't offer these up unless you threaten to leave. Use the tips below to learn about homeowners and auto insurance discounts that are available to Connecticut residents.

CT Homeowners Insurance Discounts

There are a wide range of discounts available for homeowners insurance in Connecticut. Keep in mind it will vary from company to company for availability of these discounts.

1. Combination Discount: By combining your homeowners and auto under one insurance company, many companies will reward you with a discount on both policies!

2. Smoke-Free: No, this doesn't have to do with smoke alarms, although those are helpful for saving money as well. This discount is offered by companies to non-smokers, as they are less likely to start a fire in their household.

3. Safety Devices: On to the smoke alarms, security systems, deadbolt locks, and other devices! By protecting your home from the perils that your insurance covers, you are less likely to submit a claim, therefore earning a discount.

4. Longevity Discount: Some companies will offer a small discount for keeping your business with them for 3 or more years. This discount should be weighed carefully against any potential savings you may realize by switching to a different company with a cheaper rate.

5. Clean Record: Just like in a CT auto policy, your claim record is taken into account. If you are claim-free on your homeowners, many companies will give some type of discount.

CT Auto Insurance Discounts

For Connecticut auto insurance, many think they can only qualify for discounts if they have a perfect driving record. While many discounts do revolve around your record, others have more to do with the vehicle you are driving or safety precautions you have installed in your car.

1. Good Driver: Based off your driving record over the past 3-5 years, this discount rewards those with no tickets or accidents.

2. Good Student: Typically will require a report card or transcript proving a 3.0 GPA or better, this rewards drivers between the ages of 16-24 that are full-time students.

3. Anti-Theft: If your vehicle includes certain anti-theft devices, a small percentage will be taken off your comprehensive coverage (this is the coverage that would cover theft).

4. Defensive Driver: By taking a course through the DMV, you can receive a discount for up to the three years of your policy. However, this discount typically will have a minimum age requirement between 50-65 years to be able to take this course.

5. Multi-Vehicle Discount: By having two or more vehicles on the policy, you may be eligible for an automatic discount.

6. Alternative Fuel Discount: This is a new discount and only offered by a handful of companies. This discount is for hybrid cars or other alternative fuel vehicles. This can give you a discount of up to 10% of all coverage.
